Tom Klein Announced as Secretary/Treasurer of CH&LA BoardThu Jul 18, 2013
Tom Klein, Fairmont Hotels & Resorts Regional Vice President California and General Manager of the Fairmont San Francisco, has been appointed the Secretary/Treasurer of the California Hotel & Lodging Association Board of Directors.
Prior to his current position at The Fairmont San Francisco, Mr. Klein functioned as regional vice president, The Americas for Swissôtel Hotels & Resorts, overseeing properties in Peru and Ecuador, and serving as general manager of Swissôtel Chicago. During this time, he was named Chicago “Hotelier of the Year” by the Illinois Hotel and Lodging Association and a property under his supervision, Swissôtel Quito, was honored as the second best hotel in South America by Travel & Leisure.
As senior vice president, The Americas for Raffles International Limited (2001-2003), Mr. Klein oversaw the operations of six hotels in North America and two in South America, and was actively involved in the successful purchase of Swissôtel Hotels and Resorts by Raffles Holdings.
From 1998 through 2001, he served as senior vice president, Africa for Movenpick Hotels & Resorts, while acting as chief executive officer and managing director for Karos Hotels Ltd. He also held general manager positions at The Ritz Carlton Sydney (1989-1992), Australia’s Hayman Resort (1992-1995) and The Palace Hotel in Sun City, South Africa (1995-1996), before being appointed CEO of Simola Golf & Country Estate in Knysna, South Africa, in 1996.
Mr. Klein brings the same intense level of engagement to his charitable endeavors as he does to his vocation. Inspired by a heartfelt bond with a young patient in need, his efforts on behalf of the Leukemia Lymphoma Society helped shatter fund-raising records and culminated in his recognition as the charity’s 2010 Man of the Year.
Born in Bonn, Germany, Mr. Klein moved to Australia with his family at age 3. After earning a bachelor's degree in Sociology from Boston University in 1981, he embarked upon a hospitality career beginning in Columbus, Ohio, as a waiter with Hyatt Hotel Corporation. When not working, he enjoys golfing, playing tennis, riding his Harley Davidson along the California coast and spending time with his wife and children.
But when he’s on duty, colleagues say Thomas Klein devotes heart and soul to his role at The Fairmont San Francisco, distinguishing himself as a passionate, dynamic hotel executive and a tireless steward of this timeless property.
The California Hotel & Lodging Association is looking forward to having Mr. Klein's dedication and experience on the 2013 Board of Directors.
