Annual Scholarship Grant Program
The Foundation's largest program is the Annual Scholarship Grant
Program. Affiliated schools are comprised of two and four-year hospitality
management programs in the United States.
Students receiving these scholarships are selected by their respective schools - not by
the Foundation. The schools are required to use a set of minimum eligibility
requirements designated by AH&LEF when selecting the scholarship recipients. Some
of AH&LEF's criteria include full-time enrollment status, minimum GPA of 3.0, U.S.
citizenship or permanent U.S. resident status, and completion of at least one or two
years of school. A few scholarships have slightly different criteria, depending on the
program.
Interested students should inquire at their schools in the dean's office. Schools must submit their student nominations to the Foundation for upcoming academic year by May 1st.
The Arthur J. Packard Memorial Scholarship Competition
The purpose of the Packard Competition is to provide scholarships to the most
outstanding student of lodging management and two runner-ups through an annual
competition among the AH&LEF-affiliated four-year programs.
The first-place winner receives a $5,000 scholarship. The second-place winner receives
a $3,000 scholarship and the third-place winner receives a $2,000 scholarship.
Each university nominates the one student most qualified according to
the criteria to compete in the national competition. Students should inquire in
their dean's office for consideration of the nomination and application. The
deadline date for receipt of applications is April 1st.
The Hyatt Hotels Fund For Minority Lodging Management Students
The Hyatt Hotels Fund For Minority Lodging Management Students provides financial aid to
minority students pursuing a degree in hotel management. The Hyatt Scholarship is a
national competition among the four-year universities that are members of the Council on
Hotel, Restaurant and Institutional Education.
Scholarship winners receive a $2,000 award. In 2005, a total of 18 scholarships were
awarded.
Each university nominates the one student most qualified according to
the criteria to compete in the national competition. Students should inquire in
their dean's office for consideration of the nomination and application. The
deadline date for receipt of applications is April 1st.
Rama Scholarship for the American Dream
JHM Hotels, Inc. established the Rama Scholarship for the
American Dream with a $1,000,001 endowment to the Foundation. The purpose of
the program is to provide financial aid to students pursuing degrees in hotel
management. In California, only the California State Polytechnic University at Pomona
hospitality management school has been designated to participate in the program.
The schools select the student recipients based upon a set of minimum eligibility
criteria. Preference is given to students of Asian-Indian descent and other minority
groups and to JHM Hotels employees.
Students should inquire in their dean's office for consideration of
these scholarships.
The AAA Five Diamond Hospitality Scholarship
AAA (the American Automobile Association) established the AAA Five Diamond Hospitality
Scholarship to honor one of hospitality's exceptional students. Each year, AAA selects
one of the four-year programs participating in AH&LEF's Annual Scholarship Grant
Program to receive the award. The school then selects the scholarship recipient based
upon a set of minimum eligibility criteria.
One student receives a $5,000 award.
