Get ready to "train with confidence and guide others with your recognized expertise" by attaining the first professional certification program that acknowledges the achievements of departmental trainers in the hospitality field.

The Certified Hospitality Department Trainer (CHDT):

  • Is aimed at line-level and supervisory employees with training responsibilities
  • Adds a level of professionalism to the departmental trainers' role
  • Provides an opportunity for employees to validate their skills

Qualifications for CHDT Certification

You may pursue certification through one of these options.

Plan A - Education Emphasis

  • Completion of the Educational Institute's CHDT Training in preparation for the CHDT exam.

    AND

  • Current full-time employment, as a qualified department trainer* in the hospitality industry, and served in one or more such positions for minimum of three (3) months. Once EI verifies this experience through a verification letter from a candidate's employer(s), he/she will be eligible for the CHDT designation.

Plan B - Experience Emphasis

  • Current, full-time employment as a qualified department trainer* in the hospitality industry; served in one or more such positions for a minimum of six (6) months.

* A qualified front line department trainer is a person who is responsible for training individuals for functional skills; has job duties that are at least 20 percent training in nature and include such tasks as scheduling training and development decisions within a department for line-level staff.

What does the certification fee cover?

The certification fee per applicant is $50 for AH&LA members; $65 for non-members. Fee includes application and exam administration, plus designation, lapel pin, and certificate. Recommended preparation for the exam is the CHDT Study Guide, also available from EI at $49.95 for AH&LA members, $59.95 for non-members.
