Based on the questions CH&LA and CABBI receive and the legal problems some of our members have faced recently, it is clear that it is time for a legal refresher course! Join Jim Abrams, past CH&LA President and current CH&LA Legal Advisor for this two-hour legal refresher seminar. Whether you are a B&B owner, independent hotel owner or general manager of a chain, franchise or larger hotel, you need to be following the law in regards to refusing someone a room, asking them to leave, etc. This seminar will discuss the following:

  • When you can and cannot refuse to give rooms to minors or others
  • Relevant penal and anti-discrimination laws
  • Mandatory reservations policies and procedures
  • How and when to evict someone
  • Privacy and more

Jim Abrams

Presenter Bio: Jim Abrams graduated with a B.A. in economics from the University of Oregon and a Juris Doctor degree from the University of California , Berkeley, School of Law (Boalt Hall). During his legal career, he specialized in lodging and hospitality law and in representing and advising trade associations and other non-profit entities. Jim served as President and CEO of the California Hotel & Lodging Association from January 1, 1991 through December 31, 2008, when he retired. He is still however a frequent speaker and writer on all aspects of the law relating to the lodging and hospitality industries and continues to work with CH&LA as their Member Legal Advisor.
