The Nuts and Bolts of Avoiding ADA Liability

Event Details

Seminar presented by Jim Abrams, attorney and past CEO of the
California Hotel & Lodging Association

Hotels and inns throughout California have for years been subjected to an epidemic of lawsuits claiming that they are in violation of the American's with Disabilities Act (ADA) but there are a number of things hotels can do to avoid liability.

  • Required reservation procedures
  • 2010 Standards contain many new obligations and restrictions
  • Dispersion of guest rooms
  • New rules regarding service animals (dogs and miniature horses)
  • Power-drive mobility devices (e.g. Segway)
  • Recreational facilities
  • Other developments: accessible web site, accessible furniture and equipment (e.g. hotel beds and fitness equipment), and others

This critical presentation will describe what you need to do to avoid liability for violating accessibility requirements — including the legal protections afforded to you by Senate Bill 1186, inspection and maintenance issues, your policies and procedures, and insurance issues.
