National Lodging Foundation Awards Scholarships to California Hospitality Students

California Hotel & Lodging Association’s (CH&LA) National Partner, American Hotel & Lodging Educational Foundation (AH&LEF), the not-for-profit affiliate of the American Hotel & Lodging Association (AH&LA), has distributed $514,500 via 10 scholarship programs to 343 hospitality students across the country. A total of $32,500 was awarded to 26 California students.

Pool Lift Deadline Approaching; is your property ready?

The January 31, 2013, deadline for pool and spa accessibility under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) is approaching and AH&LA is urging members to review their compliance needs.

AH&LA has worked exhaustively to secure a one year extension and clarification of the January 31, 2012, Department of Justice (DOJ) Guidance. In May 2012, DOJ granted a one year extension to January 31, 2013, and issued two guidance documents related to its interpretation of the requirements for pool and spa accessibility in the 2010 Standards for Accessible Design.

CH&LA’s Jennifer Flohr Honored with Chapter Leader of the Year Award for the Sacramento/Sierra Nevada Chapter of Meeting Professionals International

Jennifer Flohr, CAE, CMP, Senior Vice President for the California Hotel & Lodging Association (CH&LA), was recognized by Meeting Professionals International Sacramento/Sierra Nevada Chapter (MPI/SSN) with the Chapter Leader of the Year Award. The award was presented during Tuesday’s MPI/SSN luncheon at the Marriott Courtyard Sacramento Airport Natomas.

CH&LA Members Recognized at National AH&LA Stars of the Industry Awards

The Chancellor Hotel on Union Square was recognized with a Stars of the Industry Award for a Technology Innovation, the Bardessono Inn & Spa received an award for Good Earthkeeping and Cherie Davis was recognized as the Outstanding General Manager of the Year for a medium property at the American Hotel & Lodging Association’s (AH&LA) Stars of the Industry Awards. These awards were announced during the AH&LA Summer Summit held at the InterContinental Houston in Houston, Texas.

The California Hotel & Lodging Association Education Foundation (CH&LAEF) announced eleven scholarship award recipients. These scholarships, along with the sponsorship of the Hospitality Conference geared towards students’ continued education in the hospitality industry, total $19,000 for this year.

Guidance Offers Limited Substantive Changes; Affixed Lift Required

This afternoon the Department of Justice (DOJ) issued further guidance on the requirements for pool and spa entry under the Americans with Disabilities Act. On May 17, DOJ announced an extension to the compliance deadline to January 31, 2013, and also announced their intent to provide further clarification.

AH&LA Secures Extension for Existing Pool and Spa Lift ADA Compliance Date

Following months of hard work by the American Hotel & Lodging Association (AH&LA) and the lodging industry, the Department of Justice (DOJ) last night announced a substantial postponement of the ADA compliance date for existing pools and spas with ADA requirements for accessible entries. The new compliance date – January 31, 2013 – is more than an additional nine months beyond the original date of March 15, 2012.

The 11th Annual Legislative Action Summit featured Governor Jerry Brown, as well as presentations from legislative leadership, as the California lodging industry gathered in Sacramento to advocate our industry's positions with elected officials. The focus of this year's Summit included ADA laws and lawsuits, saving our parks, proposed regulation of swimming pools, and supporting the CH&LA-sponsored delay of carbon monoxide detectors to align building codes.

Court Grants Injunction Against Poster Rule

In a blow to the National Labor Relations Board's (NLRB) efforts to require employers to post notices regarding employees' rights to unionize in the workplace, a South Carolina District Court judge invalidated the NLRB’s proposed notice-posting rule earlier this week.

BREAKING NEWS: California Supreme Court Rules on Meal and Rest Breaks (BRINKER)

This morning, in a unanimous decision in the long running case of Brinker Restaurant Corporation v. Superior Court, the State’s top court ruled that “Employers must relieve employees of all duty during meal periods but NEED NOT ensure that they perform no work”.  Simply put, this is an important clarification in the difference between the obligation to provide the break vs. the obligation to ensure it is taken.

The California Association of Bed & Breakfast Inns (CABBI) has launched a free mobile app to better assist travelers in finding the perfect California bed & breakfast, inn or boutique hotel.

The new iPhone application features several mapping options, helping visitors search for B&B inns near their current location or within a specific region of the state. Enhanced maps allow users to click on regions within California and pinpoint the properties in that area. Each CABBI inn has a profile page on the app with a photo, description and links to call the inn or visit their reservations page while on-the-go.
