The California Chamber of Commerce and several statewide Disability Rights organizations have come together to produce an instructional video for small businesses to come in compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act’s requirements. All businesses must be in compliance by May 15, 2012.

White House Responds to Lodging Industry’s Appeals

The White House today issued a 60-day extension that will push the compliance date for the pool lift requirement under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) to May 15, 2012.

The American Hotel & Lodging Association announced the winners of the 2011 State Leadership Awards at their annual Legislative Action Summit. California Hotel & Lodging Association’s (CH&LA) immediate past chair, Pam Richardson was honored with the award for the state of California. The State Leadership Awards were created in 1998 to honor standout members within each partner state of AH&LA who help implement and strengthen programs.

CABBI Travel Guide Wins 2011 ISHAE Award of Excellence

California Hotel & Lodging Association Announces 2012 Board of Directors

Newport Beach, CA - The California Hotel & Lodging Association (CH&LA) elected its 2012 Board of Directors at its annual meeting this Wednesday, November 30th at the Balboa Bay Club & Resort in Newport Beach. The 2012 chair will be Rick Anderson of the Casa Tropicana Inn, San Clemente.

In addition, the elected officers for 2012 were announced as Allan Farwell, Hyatt Grand Champions Resort & Spa (Vice Chair); Bimal Patel, CHA, Concept Hotels (Secretary/Treasurer); and Pam Richardson, CHA, Barmaper & Associates (Immediate Past Chairperson). Lynn Mohrfeld, CAE is the President & CEO of CH&LA.

USA Today Stars of the Industry Award Winners Announced

The California Hotel & Lodging Association announced their 2011 Stars of the Industry award winners at the Balboa Bay Beach Club & Resort in Newport Beach, CA. The Stars of the Industry awards, presented by USA TODAY, were given out under five property and five individual categories, including a new award this year, the Women In Lodging Leader of the Year award, which recognizes a woman in the lodging industry who has stepped up as a leader and a role model within the hotel community.

SB 432 - Now a Two Year Bill

We are pleased to report that yesterday SB 432 (De León-D, Los Angeles) that requires fitted sheets and long-handled tools for housekeepers, was pulled by the author and sponsors. The Legislature is scheduled to adjourn September 9th and while SB 432 is now a two year bill, CH&LA will remain vigilant over the next couple of weeks should the author/sponsors attempt rule waivers to allow the bill to be considered again prior to adjournment. The bill will however, be eligible for further consideration in 2012.

The U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) recently announced the Fiscal Year 2012 Federal Per Diem Rates for California, which will take effect on October 1, 2011 and run through September 30, 2012.

The Handlery Foundation is giving back to the hospitality community through a $5,000 donation to the California Hotel & Lodging Association Education Foundation (CH&LAEF) scholarship program.

The Handlery Foundation has been an essential backer of the CH&LA Education Foundation and its mission to foster the education of our future hospitality industry leaders. For two generations, the Handlery family has been a very active member of California Hotel & Lodging Association for many years with Jon Handlery currently sitting on the board of directors.

Sacramento, CA - The California Hotel & Lodging Association Education Foundation (CH&LAEF) announced eleven scholarship award recipients. These scholarships, along with the sponsorship of the Hospitality Conference geared towards students' continued education in the hospitality industry, total $19,000 for this year. This assistance is provided through generous industry supporters, who firmly believe in the development of the next generation of the hospitality industry.

Pool/Spa Drain Recall

Last Thursday, May 26, 2011, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission announced a voluntary recall of pool and in-ground spa drain covers due to incorrect ratings.  While this affects well below 100,000 public pools nationwide, it is a safety issue that should be addressed immediately.

American Hotel & Lodging Association Elects California Hotel Leaders to Board of Directors

The American Hotel & Lodging Association (AH&LA) has elected René Boskoff and Terri Haack as the newest incoming members for its board of directors.

Boskoff, as General Manager of the Marriott Monterey Hotel will represent full service properties and Haack, as Executive Vice President and Managing Director of the Terranea Resort in Rancho Palos Verdes, will represent resort properties on the AH&LA board of directors. Boskoff joined Marriott International in 1975 and has served as the General Manager for the Monterey Marriott for the past 11 years.
