The 11th Annual Legislative Action Summit featured Governor Jerry Brown, as well as presentations from legislative leadership, as the California lodging industry gathered in Sacramento to advocate our industry's positions with elected officials. Court Grants Injunction Against Poster Rule

In a blow to the National Labor Relations Board's (NLRB) efforts to require employers to post notices regarding employees' rights to unionize in the workplace, a South Carolina District Court judge invalidated the NLRB’s proposed notice-posting rule earlier this week.

BREAKING NEWS: California Supreme Court Rules on Meal and Rest Breaks (BRINKER)

This morning, in a unanimous decision in the long running case of Brinker Restaurant Corporation v. Superior Court, the State’s top court ruled that “Employers must relieve employees of all duty during meal periods but NEED NOT ensure that they perform no work”.  Simply put, this is an important clarification in the difference between the obligation to provide the break vs. the obligation to ensure it is taken.

California Association of Bed & Breakfast Inns Launches Free Mobile App Reaching Out to On-The-Go Travelers

The California Association of Bed & Breakfast Inns (CABBI) has launched a free mobile app to better assist travelers in finding the perfect California bed & breakfast, inn or boutique hotel.

The new iPhone application features several mapping options, helping visitors search for B&B inns near their current location or within a specific region of the state. Enhanced maps allow users to click on regions within California and pinpoint the properties in that area. Each CABBI inn has a profile page on the app with a photo, description and links to call the inn or visit their reservations page while on-the-go. The California Chamber of Commerce and several statewide Disability Rights organizations have come together to produce an instructional video for small businesses to come in compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act’s requirements. All businesses must be in compliance by May 15, 2012.

White House Responds to Lodging Industry’s Appeals

The White House today issued a 60-day extension that will push the compliance date for the pool lift requirement under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) to May 15, 2012.

The American Hotel & Lodging Association announced the winners of the 2011 State Leadership Awards at their annual Legislative Action Summit. California Hotel & Lodging Association’s (CH&LA) immediate past chair, Pam Richardson was honored with the award for the state of California. The State Leadership Awards were created in 1998 to honor standout members within each partner state of AH&LA who help implement and strengthen programs.

CABBI Travel Guide Wins 2011 ISHAE Award of Excellence

Newport Beach, CA - The California Hotel & Lodging Association (CH&LA) elected its 2012 Board of Directors at its annual meeting this Wednesday, November 30th at the Balboa Bay Club & Resort in Newport Beach. The 2012 chair will be Rick Anderson of the Casa Tropicana Inn, San Clemente.

In addition, the elected officers for 2012 were announced as Allan Farwell, Hyatt Grand Champions Resort & Spa (Vice Chair); Bimal Patel, CHA, Concept Hotels (Secretary/Treasurer); and Pam Richardson, CHA, Barmaper & Associates (Immediate Past Chairperson). Lynn Mohrfeld, CAE is the President & CEO of CH&LA.

USA Today Stars of the Industry Award Winners Announced

The California Hotel & Lodging Association announced their 2011 Stars of the Industry award winners at the Balboa Bay Beach Club & Resort in Newport Beach, CA. The Stars of the Industry awards, presented by USA TODAY, were given out under five property and five individual categories, including a new award this year, the Women In Lodging Leader of the Year award, which recognizes a woman in the lodging industry who has stepped up as a leader and a role model within the hotel community.

SB 432 - Now a Two Year Bill

We are pleased to report that yesterday SB 432 (De León-D, Los Angeles) that requires fitted sheets and long-handled tools for housekeepers, was pulled by the author and sponsors. The Legislature is scheduled to adjourn September 9th and while SB 432 is now a two year bill, CH&LA will remain vigilant over the next couple of weeks should the author/sponsors attempt rule waivers to allow the bill to be considered again prior to adjournment. The bill will however, be eligible for further consideration in 2012.

The Handlery Foundation is giving back to the hospitality community through a $5,000 donation to the California Hotel & Lodging Association Education Foundation (CH&LAEF) scholarship program.

The Handlery Foundation has been an essential backer of the CH&LA Education Foundation and its mission to foster the education of our future hospitality industry leaders. For two generations, the Handlery family has been a very active member of California Hotel & Lodging Association for many years with Jon Handlery currently sitting on the board of directors.

The W Los Angeles Westwood was recognized with a Stars of the Industry Award for a Special Ongoing Event, the W San Francisco received an award for Good Earthkeeping and Terri Haack, Executive Vice President & Managing Director of Terranea Resort in Rancho Palos Verdes was also recognized as the General Manager of the Year for a large property at the American Hotel & Lodging Association’s (AH&LA) Stars of the Industry awards competition announced during the AH&LA Summer Summit held at the Hyatt Regency Atlanta in Atlanta, Georgia.
